Helicopter Parenting - Between the ScenesThe Daily Show

- You know, I understand
why parents get stressed. I do believe, though,
the way we deal with kids in this day and age
is partly affected by how the news reports
a lot of these stories over a certain period of time. You forget how
powerful the news is in shaping the way
we see the world, 'cause if the news says
something over and over again, you just start to
believe that it's true. You had all these stories
where kids were going missing, kids were going missing,
kids were going missing, and I'm not saying they
weren't going missing, but the news makes it seem like
it's happening to everyone.

Now, we have these
rules where it's like in some places kids can't
walk home by themselves. They can't play in the
park by themselves. This kids can't, you
get what I'm saying? People are like, you can't
be in the street by yourself. It's like, but why not? I genuinely ask, I
go like, why not? They go like, because
your kids will disappear, but it wasn't happening as, it wasn't as rampant as
people made it out to seem and the reason that I know
that is because we're here.

(Audience laughing) We're all here. I don't know about you,
but I played in the street. I walked home from school,
I'd like to get 'em. I'm not saying it didn't
happen to some people, but the news.

Do you know, you
know the best way to think of it is think
of how the news reports on plane crashes versus
car crashes, all right? Most people who are
afraid of flying got that from seeing it on the
news and you go like, what if we crash,
what if we crash? But people get into
cars all the time. You get into a taxi or an Uber and there's a sound
coming from under the car. (Audience laughing) You're driving, it's like
(imitating engine sputtering). All the engine lights
are on and you're like, (imitating video game), but an airplane just does this,
and you're like (groaning).

Just because it's not news
if there's a car crash, but airplane crashes
are reported for a week and it never happens. It's just like a, it's a powerful thing
that the news can create. Kids or not, kids, just
let them go home and play, do the thing, go, go crazy. (Audience giggling) Just run, that's how I learned
to run when I was a kid.

It's just like, yo.
(Audience laughing) My mom would tell me,
see like in America, they've got useless advice. If a man comes you
say stranger danger. Stranger danger, no, my
mom would be like, you run! (Audience laughing) You run and if he catches
you, you deserved it. (Audience laughing)
(audience clapping) (upbeat music).
